Video Project Exegesis for Final Film Project

Story Outline:

The story for our final film was set in the genre of science fiction/action. The story followed a man who was being controlled by a alien woman in a control room, who was transporting him to different realities. At each different reality there is a man, a kind of assassin, dressed in black looking and waiting for him, to kill him. Throughout each reality the woman in the control room is playing with his speed, and finally bringing him back and forth between the realities and the control room. After being transported to two different realities in the final reality he is killed by the man on a cliff top. The final scene is of the woman pulling out the plug and he is left dead. The film was shot in seven sections:

1)   Establishing shot in Control Room: We see the main male character slumped on a chair. The woman enters the empty room, ties him to the chair and blind folds him. She then places headphones over his head and puts the cord up the sleave of her jacket to reveal the play symbols. Here we assume she is not human as she starts to control the man by pressing the buttons on her jacket.

2)   Desert sequence: This is the first reality that the man is transported to. He wakes up and starts to explore where he is. He sees the assassin for the first time here, and the action sequence begins with him running away and hiding for the man. Until finally he is brought back to the control room.

3)   Control room: He’s brought back with the woman again controlling where he is going next.

4)   Storage container sequence: The second reality he is transported to is a storage facility. Because of the scale of the containers it makes him look small in comparison. Again he bumps into the assassin who chases him this time with gun. The final shot is him with the assassin with a gun to his head.

5)   Control room: He’s brought back again, only this time he’s sick, and obviously more distressed and exhausted than earlier. This is the final transportation to another reality.

6)   Cliff top sequence: The final reality, this is where he is making a choice to live or die. As he sits contemplating what to do, the assassin captures him and we flash back to the control room.

7)   Control room: The final scene, the woman tries to control him, although when she realises he’s dead she simply unplugs and walks away.

Research:

The director of the film Michael Peck, was the writer and creator of the film. He had a story that he wanted to tell. We understood the film would be along the lines of a matrix type of film, with alternate realities that we going to be explored. Michael knew all the locations that would fit perfectly for the film. As my role in sound, I knew because there wasn’t any dialogue the story would need to be told a lot by the sound used. The sound was going to create the atmosphere and help tell the story. We needed a really strong soundtrack for the film that would hold all the elements of the film together. We needed an action/sci-fi music track. Fortunately Michael had a composer he knew who composed and recorded a completely unique soundtrack for the film, which held the film together. I was able source various sound effects for the film that we needed apart from the music.
